Savor Japanese Style Cuisine at Wasabi

I recently visited the Japanese hibachi style restaurant called Wasabi located just behind the Azalea Square Theater in Summerville. There were no available parking spaces at Wasabi to park in  and the surrounding stores were packed with shoppers, so parking the car was a challenge.

I was surprised upon entering the establishment to see there were not alot of people waiting for a table. The restaurant was spacious and didn't give you the feeling of being a sardine. The wait for a seat at one of the teppan grills was not long, maybe ten minutes. A total of seven people were seated at our teppan grill, three in my party. It's not hard to strike up a conversation with the other patrons at your grill and I was surprised to find out they were all original residents of Ohio like myself.

The waitress was helpfull and courteous from beginning to end. The chef was very entertaining with a good sense of humor, the food was seasoned and sauced with the usual Japanese touch, Wasabi style, and the portions were generous, more than I could eat in a single sitting. The whole affair didn't put too bad a dent in my already battered wallet. Interested, check out Wasabi's menus on their web site where you can also get the exact address of their location in Summerville. Domo arigato Vacation Rick Travel.

Interesting trivia: Wasabi is a plant and its root is used as a spice and has an extremely strong flavor.

Summerville, SC-Picture Perfect Getaway

Summerville was the place Charlestonians went to get away from the malaria carrying mosquitoes, yellow fever, and the oppressive heat of early Charleston. It gained a reputation of being a health resort during the mid 1800's because of that. Interestingly, there were no Civil War battles fought in Summerville.

In recent years there has been an explosion in growth and population. Just talk to a local and they will reminisce on the good old days. For those who want a true taste of the South today and where history has been preserved, Summerville is the place where it all comes together.

There are some places you will not want to miss when considering a visit to "The Birthplace of Sweet Tea", Summerville. For a start, schedule a stop at the Summerville Visitor Center, everything about what to see and do is there. Refresh yourself with a glass of sweet tea. Next, visit the Summerville Dorchester Museum, home of everything you would want to know about its history--schedule an informative and entertaining tour on the Lowcountry Loop Trolley.

Want to enjoy the intimacy of a bed and breakfast, consider the historic Linwood Bed and Breakfast. If you like plays and the theater; the James F. Dean Theatre--home of the Flowertown Players will delight you. Visit the locally owned shops on Hutchinson Square, Short Central and surrounding areas. You will be treated royally with some good ole' southern hospitality. Relax a bit at Azalea Park and enjoy the serene surroundings.

Just a short drive from Summerville are the ever popular historic plantations along Route 61, Magnolia Gardens and Plantation, Middleton Place, and Drayton Hall. And of course, Historic Charleston is close by and tons to do. Beaches, restaurants, historic tours, carriage rides, its all there for your pleasure. See you there.

What's New At The South Carolina Aquarium-Penguin Planet

The South Carolina Aquarium is one of the most visited attractions in Charleston, SC. The newest addition to its numerous exhibits is Penguin Planet. The South Carolina Aquarium is drawing attention to the fact that many penguin species are in peril. Of the17 species of penguins worldwide, 13 of them are declining in population and three species are already listed as endangered. It would be a shame to see these magnificent creatures disappear. Some of the things that endanger them are overfishing, oil spills, and climate change. Overfishing is depleating their food supply for their young. Climate change, warming ocean temperatures, causes the small fish and krill the penguins feed on to change their migration patterns and habitats. Visit the Aquarium to learn more about penguins and what we can do to ensure they will always be here. Meet Waddle, a Magellanic penguin or go online and view the Penguin Cam. Music Farm In Charleston, SC-Music Lovers Hot Spot

Music Farm is a music venue in Charleston, South Carolina located at 32 Ann Street. The "original" Music Farm opened in April, 1991. From his experience as a musician and as a member of a band that had toured the Southeast, Kevin Wadley wanted a venue that focused on music, not just another nightclub. Wadley orginated the name and concept for Music Farm. Music Farm became a dynamic nightspot which quickly became known throughout the Southeast as "the place" to hear good music. Late September 2007 the Music Farm was purchased by John Ellison who is part owner of All In Entertainment. Several renovations were made to the club including the addition of a new sound and lighting system, and an expansion of the balcony. The club underwent a month of renovation and reopened on Oct 28th with The Avett Brothers. Music Farm is a hot spot for music lovers. Badfish, Halestorm, Switchfoot, and Colbie Caillat are just some of the names coming to Music Farm. Check All in Entertainment for dates.-Vacation Rick Travel.

A Nostalgic Eating Experience On Sullivan's Island, SC

Sullivan's Island, SC in the Charleston area has more than a beach and beautful vacation homes, it has Poe's Tavern. This tavern was founded to preserve the spirit of Edgar Allen Poe, author of short stories and poem's of the detective and horror story genres. He is best remembered for his popular poem "The Raven". Under the pseudonym Edgar Allan Perry, Poe was stationed at Fort Moultrie on Sullivan's Island for thirteen months beginning November 18, 1827. His time on the island inspired “The Gold-Bug”, a story about a mystical beetle that led to buried treasure. Poe's Tavern has a menu consisting of appetizers, soups, salads, tacos, sandwiches, beer, and wine. Poe's is located at 2210 Middle Street, Sullivan's Island, SC. You can eat inside or outside. My kids and myself made a stop recently at Poe's Tavern and enjoyed the eating experience. It was a very relaxed and informal setting with good food and drink. Check it out when you are in the area. A Non-Stop Thrill Attraction at Disney's Hollywood Studios

This is the one attraction my son thoroughly enjoyed since one of his obsessions is cars, fast cars. I was totally entertained myself. It is non-stop thrills and spills, high jumps and spins at high octane speed forwards and backwards. Lights, Motors, Action! Extreme Stunt Show Attraction at Disney's Hollywood Studios Theme Park is its name. The stunt cars are highly-modified Opel brand cars that weigh less than half that of a standard production car, but are twice as powerful and propelled by a 1300 cc, 150 horsepower motorcycle engine. Its a behind-the-scenes look at the filmmaking process, secrets are revealed in this thrilling combination of complex vehicle stunts choreographed with split-second precision. The show is a scheduled 33-minute attraction. Motorcycles fly through rings of fire, cars hurdle over trucks, and fireballs billow 40 feet in diameter. A note of trivia: The Stunt Show Spectacular debuted at Walt Disney Studios Paris in March, 2002. Visit Vacation Rick Travel Disney.

A Must See Epcot Attraction-Disney World, Florida

This is one attraction you do not want to miss if you have children and if you don't, it is still worth your while to see. I thoroughly enjoyed it and tried to figure out how it was done. It is so sophisticated technologically, it seems so true to life. The attraction is at Epcot located inside The Seas with Nemo and Friends Pavilion in Future World.

The sophistacated Turtle Talk with Crush takes place inside a theater featuring a large "window to the ocean world" and amazingly appears that way. The attraction utilizes technolgy advanced in the state-of-the-art, 3D, voice-activated computer animation field. Crush, although an animation, can communicate directly in real time. The children are instructed to sit up front where Crush interacts with them, answering their questions and holding unique, improvised conversations. The parents sit behind them on bench seats.

No two shows are alike because the interaction changes. Turtle Talk with Crush is a 15-minute show presented throughout the day, so you have plenty of opportunuties to catch it. You can check the Times Guide located throughout Epcot's Future World to know exactly when you can catch the show.

Myrtle Beach-A Place to Re-Connect

Myrtle Beach has long been a popular place to hit the beach and enjoy the water in the hot South Carolina sun. Plenty to do at night after the sun goes down. Spent the day there with my cous', Sandy and her family. A great time since it had been a few years since we saw each other. Joscelyn stayed in the sun a little too long. Cassie and Joscelyn met Simon Barry and for a moment dreamed of being your next American Idol. Ed spent most of his time keeping tabs on Cassie and Joscelyn, but managed to catch a few rays on top of it. We got sloushed on Bellini ice tea and margaritas. Space Mountain in the Magic Kingdom Getting Upgraded

Space Mountain is a 34-year-old attraction located in the Tomorrowland section of Disney's Magic Kingdom Florida. The attraction is completely enclosed with a ride dome that is hollow and 300ft in diameter. Space Mountain is the only version that has two roller coaster tracks within the iconic mountain structure. They are mirror images of each other, with only minor variations to allow the tracks to cross one another as needed. The left side track is called Alpha while the right side track is called Omega. Both tracks offer the same experience for guests, with effects equally shared and duplicated, the Alpha track is slightly longer than Omega by about 10 feet. The rockets reach a speed of 28 mph. This is all going to change. Space Mountain is one month into a seven month renovation that will include new track--though the layout will remain the same--and a new ceiling. There is speculation that Space Mountain could be in line for an electronic-game-filled queue similar to the one Disney installed at Epcot's Soarin' in 2007. Stay tuned and see what is in store for Space Mountain as it takes on a new experience for its riders. Visit Vacation Rick Travel for your travel needs.

The American Idol Experience at Disney World Orlando is Hot

I featured this attraction in an earlier post before it opened. Now it is here and it is a big hit. There are two ways to participate in this attraction. The ultimate thrill, if you dare, is to be on-stage and the other is being in the audience voting for the winner. There are seven regular shows a day, each featuring three performers. The winners will compete agaist each other in an eighth show and the last one standing gets a grand reward: A front-of-the-line ticket to any one of the next season's "American Idol" tryouts in the country. That's worth a visit to Disney World Orlando if you think you have what it takes. Up to 400 can audition each day, and about 40 will make it past the first cut. Then 21 are eventually cast to compete in seven regular shows. It's that simple. Well, it seems simple. Why not give it a shot. See you in Orlando or maybe on American Idol. Just a reminder: American Idol winner, Kris allen, will be at Disney's Hollywood Studios May 29th at 10 a.m..

Take the Plunge at Disney's Typhoon Lagoon Florida

You will not be disappointed when you spend a hot day at Disney's Typhoon Lagoon. The family enjoyed every minute of it. Plenty to do and a large selection of slides and water attractions to please everyone, from someone wanting to relax in the water, to the daring who are looking for a thrill. The family favorite was Crush 'n' Gusher. There are three different slides in this section to choose from ranging from 410 to 420 ft. in length, but all of them end up splashing into "Hideaway Bay" pool. The three slides are "Banana Blaster", "Coconut Crusher", and "Pineapple Plunger". Next, is the wave pool, the world's largest. The kids loved waiting for the waves to build and then come splashing down and sweeping them towards the beach. The Typhoon Lagoon Surf Pool generates 6-foot waves. Surf lessons are available in the hours before the water park opens for guests 8 and older.
